🎧 Why Your Kids Might Need Therapy During Divorce
Apr 22, 2025Five years ago, shortly after my ex-husband moved out, my then 5½-year-old son—who had been fully toilet-trained for years—started wetting the bed again.
Not long after, his hair began to fall out. Then came the tantrums, the fear, the clinginess. When my friend Suzanne visited, he held onto her arms and wouldn’t let go.
💔 It shattered me.
I knew he was struggling.
Because what I was witnessing was regression—a natural response to stress where children temporarily revert to earlier developmental behaviours like bedwetting, meltdowns, or separation anxiety.
But the hardest part?
I didn’t know how to help him.
I was drowning, too—in fear, confusion, and emotional overload.
And I worried…
Was he too young for therapy?
Would he understand what was happening?
It took me more than a year to reach out for professional help.
And looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for him—and for me.
🧠In this episode of Untying the Knot, I sit down with someone who’s been a true godsend in our journey: my son’s therapist, Josh Rinz, a neurodivergence clinic specialist and parent of two neurodivergent young adults.
In this episode, we talk about:
➡️ Signs your child might be struggling
➡️ When to consider therapy for your kids
➡️What are children’s biggest fears when their parents separate
➡️How to talk to your kids about divorce, even when you’re unsure yourself
➡️The most well-meaning but harmful phrase parents say
➡️What to do if your child—or your ex-spouse—resists therapy
Josh also shared one of the most potent reminders:
“Your child isn’t expecting perfection. But you can do them a huge service by modelling what it means to be human.”
So if you’re a parent or step-parent going through a divorce and you’ve ever asked yourself…
“Will my kids be okay?”
This conversation is for you.
